firas waez

southern fried records new comer firas has appeared on the radar. first heard this tune at bestival, being played at 12:30pm on Friday afternoon by another young gun, stop making me. not great vibes at this time of day but this record is contagious. He's playing this Friday at the big chill house. blap.

audio, video, disco, are not working

here we have another sample of the new justice flavour that's up and coming on their new album. i'm a massive advocate of all things french (well nearly), but for me civilisation was a real disappointment, it completely lacked the rough edge that featured on their first full record. audio, video, disco sees a slight redemption. it still features the happy go lucky vocals which for me really don't cut it. i hope this is just a curve ball thrown in by the chain smoking duo. feed me a diet of waters of nazareth and je serai content.

forgive us all

not a video but a song, a great song at that. it can only be described as drug-enhancing. i'm no purveyor, nor indeed a guru when it comes to drugs but the plodding bass line, the shimmering guitar chords and Rob "Roy" Raindorf's semi-conscious stream of lyrics that fuse a range of dialects lend's this song to many a green night with brothers and friends. oh lord, have mercy, upon we all, forgive us our sins.

the end (for today)

sammy winter at home

blakeway is becoming something of a hero in this blog's books, and rightly so. the soundtrack is always spot on and the filming captures shot that perhaps don't scream "look at me" but sing "effortlessly cool". i just wish he churned this stuff out quicker.

the boss man

this guy is the boss. snowboarder, producer, director and all round king of white powder travis rice. hyping this film won't really do it justice as it will still kill expectations (and that's in a good way). this is going to be more than a snowboarding documentary, this is going to the be the art of flight.

above the dust

the glitch mob seem to tailor make music for cinematic pieces. throw in some slow mo footage and suddenly you have yourself a stand out video.

10. deep

after a brief period of absence due to work and other life madness it's back. another reason why there's been a lack of material up here is because i find myself trawling through clips that just don't do anything for me. i've (at least i think) realised what i look for in a video although i couldn't articulate this to you or anyone else. a storm is brewing and a vision is forming, how, when and in what guise this blend of brain mash comes out in i am still to discover. when i know, trust me you will know.

in the meantime roll the film, dim the lights, drink, smoke, fuck, smile, laugh and enjoy.

this song has been butchered by remixes, samples and "re-interpretations". the original is a timeless classic that will go down in the pantheon of the greats. cassius - i love you so.

a shot in the dark

as we reach mid summer everyone starts to gear up for the start of the winter season and production crews go in to overdrive with hd cameras and epic landscape shots. i have love for this trailer and the slow mo footage is truly incredible and yet it's a shame that they haven't provided this trailer with a soundtrack that really does the videography justice. it seems as though the soundman has been watching too much pirates of the carribean. nevertheless the trailer is still worth 3mins 51 seconds of your time.

tim hetherington

This is Tim Hetherington. He is a British photojournalist who photographs conflicts across the world; most noted for his work in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Afghanistan.

Today he died in a mortar attack whilst covering the conflict in the frontline city of Misrata, Libya. His last message was a tweet which read, "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Gaddafi forces. No sign of NATO."

Below is a clip to his film Restrepo. A documentary about the second platoon, B company, 2nd battalion, 503rd infantry regiment (airborne) of the 173rd airborne brigade combat team in the Korengal valley. At the time the film was made, the Korengal valley was widely regarded as the deadliest place on earth. This film won the grand jury prize for the best documentary at the 2010 Sundance film festival and was nominated for the 2011 academy award (oscar) for best documentary. This was Tim Hetherington's gift. RIP.

pre-sxsw avec tyler, the creator

this man is leading the charge in a shake-up of rap music. leader and chief of hip-hop/skateboarding troop Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, their music has been daubed horror core. filled with vitriol, dark energy and voodoo magic it hits you like a shockwave. their live shows have been compared to punk gigs as they irk and antagonize the crowd, from the video you can see it's a ruckus affair

"i don't wanna sound to full-a myself but i'm the hottest nigga right now, like i have niggas on my dick. i have the coolest video out right now. like, at the moment i'm that nigga. but i don't let it go to my head."

stuff

Stuff is a short documentary of john frusciante's house during the most chaotic and self-destructive time of his life. Shot by his good friends Johnny Depp and Gibby Haynes it provides a brief insight into the life of a man who was capable of the most sheers acts of brilliance and yet was pulled down by a drug addiction that ravaged his body and placed him on the banks of the Acheron. Although Frusciante doesn't appear in the documentary he unwittingly provides a chilling soundtrack, taken from recordings he made during his most serious bouts of heroin addiction. The music enhances the feeling of despair and hopelessness, with him later rambling on, much of which is incomprehensible. It is a portrayal of not only a drug addict but of the costs of fame to someone so young and impressionable.

"it's a way of staying in touch with beauty instead of letting the ugliness of the world corrupt your soul." (Frusciante discussing heroin addiction - 1994)

moombahton

now i try and keep powerthroughperfection strictly video business but a new era is on the horizon so i thought i'd dedicate a few words and a bit of time to this one-off. a new era of music is on the horizon, they call it MOOMBAHTON. this genre of electronic is not even a year old but is gaining growing recognition and support from an array of djs and producers such as Brodinski and Diplo as well as the "big" electronic record labels. conceived by the nada from electro outfit nadastrom (dave nada and matt nordstrom) this genre of music is expected to kick-off in 2011. here's a few words from the creator of Moombahton to give you an incite of its origins and foundations.

"Moombahton is mid-tempo global bass music for the universe. It's a sonic marriage of electronic dance music (house, techno, and dubstep) with latin/island music (reggeaton, cumbia, and dancehall) that flows at a pace of about 108 beats per minute. Originally, moombahton started by Dave Nada slowing down tropical and dutch house records and re-edited them to sound like reggaeton's weird little cousin. Because the tempo nears that of reggaeton, Nada created the neologism "Moombahton" by combining the title of the track "Moombah" by DJ Chuckie & Silva Cuomo and the "ton" ending of the word "reggaeton" and applied it to the new genre. Moombahton continues to grow worldwide as producers and DJ's push the music in exciting new ways."

- Dave Nada

NASA - the frontier is everywhere

to steal a word or two from the publisher of this video, why do NASA, a collective of some of the cleverest minds and imaginations in the world struggle to effectively communicate their utterly astonishing work when coca cola can make their beverage seem like the holy grail of fizzy drinks? this video is a tribute to the "most epic institution ever devised by human beings." a standing ovation for that man.
